Compass points

Kitty's put together a Philip Pullman page in anticipation of The Golden Compass opening this weekend; she's included links to both Monica Edinger and Bill Donohue, who must be stamping his little feet over The Catholic News Service's benevolent review.

And we apologize for the kind of rough audio, but my podcast interview with Pullman is also up for your listening pleasure.

A quote from the Catholic News Service Review reads:

"The film contains intense but bloodless fantasy violence, anti-clerical subtext, standard genre occult elements, a character born out of wedlock and a whiskey-guzzling bear."

I can decide whether the "whiskey-guzzling bear" is of genuine concern or an authorial wink at the limits of extreme literalism when evaluating the moral messages of an epic fantasy, but either way, it's my favorite phrase of the day.

Sorry, that should be "I CAN'T decide"

Click on "benevolent review" above and watch what happens!
Maybe it's just my computer but I didn't know one could withdraw copy this way. It seems to be the equivalent of cutting pages out of a book.
