More overheard passersby

On my way to the subway this morning, I pass a man and a woman walking, smiling, hand in hand. Man to woman: "I just think you're playing with fire, this close to the wedding."

She's either thinking of hooking up with the bridesmaid she's had a crush on since sophomore year at Swarthmore, or of switching caterers.

My bet is that she was asking her fiance what he thought of her getting a perm.

Clearly I don't think much of people because my first thought was that they were having an affair and she's marrying someone else.

Or maybe she's Julia Roberts and he's the Rupert Everett character, but the first Anon is still my favorite.

I think she has decided to wear white!

The best thing I've overhead lately from a passerby was in Monterey last weekend. We were passing a family, and this little girl asked, breathless, "Do you think there are Mermaids in there?" (pointing at Monterey Bay). And that, my friends, is why it's worth listening to these little glimpses of conversations. It brightened our day. As this couple, who may or may not be marrying each other, brightened yours, Roger.

Jen's right; it's healthy to unplug yourself from the iPod once in a while. If I were a novelist, I could sit on a park bench for an hour and call it work.

This comment session could be a contest in Rosebud magazine. I was going to post something funny until I read the first anon and realized I need more coffee to try to top that. Loved the mermaid comment too, thanks all for sharing.

my favorite overheard moment was in a supermarket. a very young child was left sitting in the carriage seat and was crying and crying and crying while his mom shopped elsewhere for the moment. as she returned he saw her and screamed out thru his tears "I DON'T WANT TO BE A BABY!"

Was this just brilliant insight on his part, or had she spelled her cheating husband into an infnats body?
