Possibly even an aardvark with a long nose.
Reminds me of the time I saw a young child pulling animal crackers out of a box, holding them up and announcing "Arthur!" to which the adult would say "No, that's a... well, a rhino, I think." "No, that's a... let's call that a lion."
I think any new companion in the Marc Brown universe will resemble their real-life counterparts with the same muddled detail as an animal cracker.
