I'm certainly not "Diary of a Wimpy Kid's" intended audience, but I couldn't finish even the first book of the series. I kept asking myself, "Why should I care about this kid? He's not even nice to his so-called best friend." An indication, perhaps, of how disconnected I am with popular tastes.

Hmm, I feel the need to clarify on my previous comment. There are some books where the protagonist isn't "nice" (i.e. "The Great Gilly Hopkins"), but the story gives me a reason to invest myself in following what happens to that character.

In "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," what I read of the first book, and I confess it was less than half, had me asking, "Is it worth it to turn the page? Do I want to see what happens to this kid? Will I care? Or should I put this thing aside and try 'The True Meaning of Smekday' instead?"
